The Vuthela iLembe LED Programme aims to contribute to the improvement of the economic future of the iLembe District and the quality of life of its inhabitants, through sustainable growth of the local economy and the creation of higher, better and more inclusive employment and income generating opportunities.

The Programme is a joint initiative of the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the iLembe District Municipality, and the KwaDukuza and Mandeni Local Municipalities. The programme includes the participation of the Ndwedwe and Maphumulo Local Municipalities.

Programme Objectives

The overarching objective and expected impact of the programme is to contribute to the improvement of the economic future of the ILembe district and the quality of life of its inhabitants, through sustainable growth of the local economy, and the creation of higher, better and more inclusive employment and income generating opportunities.

Igniting Agency

A project of this nature cannot significantly alter the economic trajectory of the local economy but it can shift people’s behaviours around a common set of objectives and show what can be achieved through partnerships and collective action – most importantly it can ignite people to take responsibility for longer term development initiatives within the region. Successful interventions build heavily on agency – on people building belief, acting and realising and experiencing real benefit from this. Project actions will be directed towards people seeing and feeling change, and witnessing the delivery of the project.

The Green Economy as a Strategic Integrator

A strategic integrator focuses the minds of stakeholders on a focal point with common, achievable goals, resulting in visible and tangible benefits. The strategic focus for this project is on identifying and implementing projects in the green economy space which can support inclusive growth for the local economy and meet the project objectives.
